Montgomery Trees held another workday at Goodwyn Middle School. Boy Scouts from Troop 4 came out Saturday morning and gave some TLC to the 7 new oaks funded through our Trees for Schools Program. The Nuttall and Willow oaks replaced a stand of century water oaks blown down in a flat line wind storm last year.

The Scouts gave the new trees some TLC, weeding and mulching to the drip lines to protect and beautify the trees. After finishing that, they discovered a water oak seedling in a clump of weeds. This seedling is the legacy of the huge water oaks that were lost.

The photo at the top shows the Scouts standing around the small seedling. It’s been weeded, mulched, and pruned and we will watch and take care of it so that it will one day proudly stand as a reminder of the lost trees.

A huge thanks to Montgomery Trees’ own Will Liner. Will, an active Montgomery Trees’ member, is an Auburn grad and works for the Alabama Forestry Commission. Will is also an Eagle Scout who serves as Assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 4.

Thanks also to volunteers Horticulturist Jane McCarthy and Jeff Benton. They weeded in the overgrown stub beds and pulled vines off the building. Jane has a gift for garden design, and it was she who recommended the placement of the new trees.
